Background of the Study

Maternity leave policies play a crucial role in supporting female employees during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Proper leave policies can enhance employee well-being, job satisfaction, and workplace productivity. However, inadequate maternity leave provisions often force women to choose between career advancement and family responsibilities, leading to stress and decreased work efficiency (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024).

In Borno State, where socio-economic challenges persist, many organizations struggle to provide adequate maternity leave. Some employers limit leave durations or fail to offer paid leave, making it difficult for female employees to balance work and motherhood. The impact of maternity leave policies on employee productivity in Borno State remains underexplored, necessitating research on how improved policies can benefit both employees and organizations.

Statement of the Problem

Many female employees in Borno State face challenges related to inadequate maternity leave policies, affecting their job performance and overall well-being. Organizations that fail to provide adequate leave risk lower employee retention, higher absenteeism, and reduced productivity. Despite labor laws advocating for maternity leave, enforcement remains weak. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of maternity leave policies in Borno State and their impact on female employee productivity.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the adequacy of maternity leave policies in workplaces in Borno State.

2. To assess the impact of maternity leave on female employee productivity.

3. To evaluate employer compliance with maternity leave regulations.

4. To recommend improvements to maternity leave policies for better employee well-being.

Research Questions

1. How adequate are maternity leave policies in workplaces in Borno State?

2. What is the impact of maternity leave on employee productivity?

3. To what extent do employers comply with maternity leave regulations?

4. What improvements can be made to maternity leave policies?

Research Hypotheses

1. Adequate maternity leave policies positively impact female employee productivity.

2. Organizations with paid maternity leave have higher employee retention rates.

3. Weak enforcement of maternity leave regulations leads to non-compliance among employers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on female employees in various sectors in Borno State. Limitations may include reluctance from employers to disclose maternity leave policies and difficulty in obtaining data on policy enforcement.
